Cogito Categorizer - Expert System

 Cogito, the software that understands the meaning of words

Cogito is the pioneer semantic software developed by Expert System. It understands the meaning of words, like a person does when reading. That’s why it’s a unique technology.

Because Cogito comprehends text, it controls the chaos generated by the thousands of files, documents, emails, articles, and web pages that we have to manage everyday. Unlike traditional technologies based on keyword and statistics that can only guess the content of a text, Cogito reads and interprets all knowledge trapped in unstructured text, finding hidden relationships, trends, and events making the work of any knowledge worker or interactions with customers more effective. Cogito helps business professionals make better decisions faster.

 How the Cogito Categorizer is integrated to SharePoint

The SharePartXXL Taxonomy Extension for Microsoft SharePoint supports several different types of categorizers to perform the category suggestion feature (all versions) and the auto-categorizing feature (advanced version only):
  • A regular expression based internal categorizer (included in all versions, no additional licenses)
  • A rule-based categorizer (requires additional licenses, more details on release)
  • the semantic based Cogito Categorizer offered by Expert System (requires additional licenses for the connector and the Expert System Software depending on requirements)

The Cogito Categorizer is integrated to the SharePartXXL Taxonomy Extension for Microsoft SharePoint by the SharePartXXL Cogito Connector. If the connector is licensed you have an additional option in the Taxonomy Configuration Manager to choose the Cogito Categorizer and enter the URL to the Cogito server. If this option is set and well configured, the connector dispatches the requests to an existing Cogito installation via web services and receive the categories back. All this is done in background by the connector.

 Knowledge Management Extension for Microsoft SharePoint integrates Expert System's Categorizer

The SharePartXXL Taxonomy Extension for WSS/MOSS now integrates Expert System’s Cogito Categorizer to enable knowledge management for SharePoint-based portals:

SharePartXXL integrates Cogito Categorizer, an innovative semantic solution for the automatic classification of information developed by Expert System, leading provider of semantic software, which discovers, classifies and interprets text information. By way of the automatic semantic analysis of the content Cogito Categorizer automatically classifies with high precision large volumes of documents based on the main topic, enabling knowledge workers a more effective way to retrieve relevant information. Integrated in the SharePartXXL Taxonomy Extension for Microsoft SharePoint this categorizer now can be used to enable Knowledge Management in SharePoint portals based on WSS and MOSS.
SharePoint technology is increasingly being used by companies and organizations, especially to simplify browser based collaboration with Microsoft Office over the Internet. With the fast growing amount of collaboration data, the need for additional features to quickly access information items and documents has never been greater.
By far the most common and effective method of finding information is browsing structured classification systems, so called taxonomies, by different navigations. With the SharePartXXL Taxonomy Extension additional navigations, e.g. category trees, A-Z directories, tag clouds, related links or category search can be used to organize documents and list items in a SharePoint-based portal cross-site as part of a connected content network and knowledge model.

The tagging process now can be greatly improved by using the Expert System's Cogito Categorizer to assign with precision and to any kind of text, one or more categories depending on the content. The semantic analysis of contents enables the automatic generation of the metadata map, facilitating a simpler retrieval in the next phase of search.

With the SharePartXXL Taxonomy Extension for Microsoft SharePoint integrating the Cogito Categorizer the WSS/MOSS-based portal becomes a place to share knowledge as well as content.

 How Cogito was born

“When I started to think about automatic comprehension of texts, I selected some aspects of the wider process of human comprehension. With the agreement of engineers, programmers, mathematicians and linguists, I focused on the following:
  • analysis of the context and the structure in order to perform the most accurate disambiguation of the meaning of words having more than one meaning. Identifying the right meaning of words is fundamental to “understanding” the subject of the text;
  • analysis of the logical structure of the sentences in order to identify the most relevant elements in the document;
  • algorithms to identify the expressive structures that, when recognized, can infer important information from the content.
Just then, Cogito was born.”

Marco Varone, the Chief Technology Officer of Expert System
